Ferdowsi had written sixty thousand of them …

  Unfortunately, Sultan Mahmoud was dejected:

  the long years of peace were proving hard to bear

  without the rich, gluey feel of blood on his hands.

  He sent the poet home with a mere sack of silver.

  Years later, as the Sultan was about to ride into battle,

  a minister recited a sad song of singular beauty.

  When the Sultan learned Ferdowsi was its author,

  he immediately sent him a caravan laden with gold;

  but as the caravan entered the city through one gate,

  Ferdowsi’s remains were being wheeled out the other.
